video works in the Project Space, 21, 22, 24 September:
Vistas, DVD triptych, 5 mins looped, 2005
Vistas focuses on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge,
an emblem of possibility, prosperity, and a symbolic frontier
of diasporas and the West. Situating the viewer before, beside,
and beyond, over bay, strait, and ocean waters, the threshold
and portal appears simultaneously concrete and elusive, shadowy
and solid, continually withdrawing from view. Vistas was originally
commissioned by Beaconsfield, London, for Lightsilver (2005),
and developed during Electric Greenhouse, an Artquest/B3 Media
digital arts residency. It is one of a series of works in the
ongoing project, Golden, exploring notions of place, nostalgia,
and aspiration, migration and diaspora, between London, Hong
Kong and San Francisco.
REEL, DVD, alternating audio/video sequence,
5 mins looped, 2005
REEL is an alternating audio / video sequence edited from regional
news footage held at the Media Archive of Central England (MACE).
The footage, ranging from 'Ballroom' to 'Morris' to 'Ukrainian
Folk', dates from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s, and comprises
material catalogued under 'Dance', that might also be classified
as various examples of ‘cultural display’. REEL
draws attention to the glances and gestures that signal the
‘before’ and ‘after’ or ‘edge’
of performance, as well as the recurring motif of circling or
‘reeling’, while the corresponding yet dislocated
audio is arranged as a chronological, cultural soundtrack.
