On
the structure:
Adrift, 18 minutes, 2006
An audio reworking of BBC Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast
created by digitally removing every word except “...falling...”
whilst maintaining the timing and positioning of the words as
they appear in the original broadcast. This process leaves lengthy
periods of silence between the spoken words and alludes to early
minimalist compositions such as Cage’s 4’33’’
but it is also a kind of biblical portent. The reception of
the work is in perpetual flux as unpredictable collisions occur
between it and the noise of its surrounding environment.
In the Project Space 25 - 27 September:
Launch, 4 minutes, DVD projection, 2005
Cut-and-paste, archive film footage and audio from 1969 of Apollo
11’s Saturn V rockets. The towering Saturn V provided
the necessary thrust for astronauts to break free from Earth’s
gravity. The seductive imagery and crushing soundtrack build
in speed and intensity to create an unsettling video installation
in which the Saturn V is confined to Earth.
On Modern Ruins, 3 minutes, DVD video for monitor,
2006
Archive footage from Project Apollo, post-launch. The video
of a burning launch pad is overlaid with audio recordings from
contemporary rocket launches and Harry Nilsson’s ‘Something
True’. The voices on the soundtrack speak of the future,
of frontiers and of the betterment of mankind. Filled with Romantic
melancholy the work raises the spectre of failed and abandoned
projects. |
